Emily’s teaching style stems from her love of instrumental pedagogy, merging traditional clarinet techniques and study with musicians’ wellness, highlighted through the Alexander Technique experience. These approaches aim to bring consciousness and mindfulness to a student’s everyday practice and performance study, thereby aiding in difficulties that arise with both performance anxiety and instrumental practice injury. In the future, Emily hopes to develop a series of original, Electroacoustic Etudes for undergraduate and graduate clarinetists by expanding upon work for her upcoming Doctoral Document. These studies will introduce and scaffold students through the pedagogy and technique involved in performing electroacoustic clarinet pieces. This would allow students to gain practical experience in handling various types of performance technology as well as promote ease of access to the electroacoustic performance genre. Providing students with the direct application of techniques one may experience, again, in this genre of literature is critical from an early stage of performance. These studies will take the same developmental approach as other technique and melodic-based studies such as that of the Kropech, Rose, Cavallini, and Jean-Jean studies. Her document will aim to highlight pieces that are suitable given the students technical ability givied the range, length, style, electronic typings, composer, year, purchase site, and short description of the electronics and piece itself. As a performer, Emily advocates and performs new music compositions in hopes to bolster collaborations with composers and other various media creators. Her most recent escapades have included designing and creating visual media for various compositions and composers, which she has also performed. You can find some of these recordings in the performance category on her site, as well as the graphic designs she has created for individual commissions, the ICA, and UNL Clarinet Studio.A member of both the International Clarinet Association and the National Association for Music Educators, Emily now serves as Chair of the Membership and Development Committee for the ICA.
